Rocket Lab has officially rescheduled the maiden flight of its reusable Neutron rocket from the fourth quarter of 2026 to 2027. CEO Peter Beck attributed the delay to manufacturing issues identified in the forward dome of the first-stage propellant tank.
Engineers discovered microscopic air voids and delamination gaps within the carbon-fiber composite structure of the tank. These defects pose a significant risk of structural failure, necessitating the postponement to ensure flight safety and operational readiness.
The announcement triggered a sharp decline in Rocket Lab's stock price. Following the news, shares dropped over 14% in intraday trading, eventually closing down 6.6% at $55.25. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen approximately 25%.
Wall Street analysts have responded by lowering their price targets for the company. KeyBanc reduced its target from $135 to $100, while Clear Street adjusted its forecast from $129 down to $105.
