Starknet community members have voted to investigate the transition to an independent layer 1 blockchain capable of resisting quantum computing threats. In a non-binding poll, 93.5% of participants supported the research initiative. The vote saw a record turnout with over 3,200 wallets participating during the week-long period.
StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation are leading the research, which begins immediately. A draft white paper is expected to be released for public review in November. CEO Eli Ben-Sasson aims to achieve quantum-safe status by 2027, noting that the Ethereum network's current target of 2029 may be too slow to address potential risks.
While Starknet currently utilizes STARK proofs and hash-based cryptography, it remains dependent on Ethereum for data availability and bridge security. The research will explore ways to reduce this reliance. During this phase, the user experience remains unchanged, with STRK continuing as the native token and existing Ethereum bridges staying operational.
The network has already started implementing post-quantum measures, including the deployment of Falcon-based accounts on the mainnet. Additionally, the system has successfully accepted a post-quantum proof generated by a smartphone. The current vote does not authorize an immediate migration from Ethereum but serves to initiate formal proposals for future governance.
