SpaceX has reassigned over 300 engineers from its rocket and Starlink divisions to its AI data center operations. The company initiated this move after an internal call for volunteers drew more than 1,300 applicants. This shift follows a management change in late June 2026, when Wesley Salandro replaced Dan Rowland as the lead for the data center team.
The company currently manages approximately 1.4 GW of computing capacity and aims to exceed 2 GW by the end of 2026. The engineering team is now prioritizing the implementation of power and cooling redundancy, the establishment of stricter testing protocols, and the replacement of temporary infrastructure at the flagship Colossus campus in Memphis.
SpaceXAI reported $2.6 billion in external compute rental revenue for the second quarter of 2026. The company is currently slowing expansion efforts outside of Memphis to focus on stabilizing existing facilities. These improvements are intended to support ongoing partnerships with clients such as Google and Anthropic.
Looking ahead, the company plans to begin satellite production for orbital data centers by 2027. This initiative represents a long-term strategic goal for the organization as it continues to develop its computing infrastructure.
