SpaceX has reversed its decision to throttle internet speeds for residential Starlink users who consume large amounts of data. The company previously reduced connection speeds to approximately 10 Mbps for customers who exceeded certain usage thresholds, despite marketing the service as unlimited.
Users reported that speed restrictions were triggered after reaching roughly 5 TB of monthly data or 500 GB of daily usage. Many subscribers received notifications regarding terms of service violations, which led to significant performance drops that hindered basic web browsing.
Following widespread complaints on platforms like Reddit and direct contact with technical support, SpaceX began restoring full speeds for affected accounts. The company has not officially confirmed the specific data caps, noting that the observed limits were based on user reports.
This is not the first time SpaceX has adjusted its traffic management policies. In 2022, the firm proposed a 1 TB monthly high-speed limit for residential users but abandoned the plan in May 2023. Currently, the Standard plan remains unlimited, while the Priority tier includes specific data caps that can reduce speeds to 1 Mbps.
