Shigeru Miyamoto, the creative advisor at Nintendo known for the Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda series, recently shared his perspective on the role of generative AI in game development. He addressed the topic during a press conference following his receipt of the Order of Culture in Japan.

Miyamoto compared the rise of AI to the evolution of past technologies, such as the transition from typewriters to word processors. He noted that while tools change, the core of design remains rooted in the creator's unique vision and layout sensibility rather than mere technical execution.

The designer emphasized a distinction between the act of creation and the specific tasks involved in production. He warned that developers might mistake the satisfaction of completing technical tasks for the creation of high-quality work, noting that AI could help creators refocus on what truly matters.

Miyamoto argued that work lacking a unique design intent often fails to stand the test of time. He concluded that regardless of how advanced AI becomes, human creators will remain essential because the value of a project ultimately depends on the individual's intent and expression.
