Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella detailed how he utilizes AI agents to streamline business operations and data analysis. He emphasizes the ability of these systems to perform causal reasoning, which allows for deeper interaction with complex datasets rather than passive consumption of AI-generated results.
A key application involves the Excel agent, which Nadella uses to evaluate capital efficiency metrics. For instance, he recently tasked the agent with analyzing a complex spreadsheet from the data center team. The system examined specific formulas and generated five distinct scenario-based worksheets to support decision-making.
The second major advancement involves integrating internal enterprise data with global information sources. Nadella demonstrated this by deploying a data runner within Microsoft Fabric to ingest SEC filings from cloud providers. These external documents are combined with internal analytics to provide real-time tracking of return on invested capital.
Nadella highlights that the core value of these AI agents lies in their iterative capabilities. By enabling users to manipulate inputs, ask follow-up questions, and perform continuous reasoning, the tools move beyond simple automation to become active participants in complex corporate workflows.
