Anthropic has significantly reduced the hiring of junior technical staff, with the share of such positions dropping from 21 percent to 14 percent since early 2025. The decline is even more pronounced among new hires, where the junior share fell from 27 percent to 9 percent. A sharp decrease in open junior roles began in December 2025.

The company attributes this shift to the performance of its AI agents. By August 2026, these agents logged six times as many work hours as human employees. Claude now handles tasks such as writing code and debugging, which has led to a reduction in junior hiring for roles where the AI manages complex assignments.

Internal data shows productivity gains across departments. Engineers increased code commits by 5.1 times, data scientists ran 3.1 times more queries, and the legal team processed 3.1 times more contracts. Sales, recruitment, and accounting departments also reported productivity increases ranging from 1.4 to 1.7 times.

Researcher Nolan Lovett warns of a potential long-term impact on the labor market, noting that entry-level roles are essential for developing skilled professionals. He suggests that the full consequences of replacing junior staff with AI may not be fully realized until 2030 to 2045, particularly in software engineering, finance, and law.
