Samsung is upgrading its 8nm manufacturing process with the introduction of 8LPU+. This platform, which does not utilize expensive EUV scanners, relies on DUV lithography with immersion exposure to maintain cost-efficiency.
According to reports, the 8LPU+ process aims to deliver a 12% increase in performance, a 15% reduction in power consumption, and an 8% decrease in logic area compared to the original 8LPU technology.
The company targets clients prioritizing low production costs and reliability. Potential applications include automotive microcontrollers, zonal control units, industrial robotics, and edge AI systems.
The new process integrates 3.3V planar I/O devices, reducing circuit area by 10%. It also incorporates ultra-low-power SRAM and high-threshold voltage transistors to improve standby power efficiency.
Samsung has also included support for eMRAM, which is noted for its temperature resistance and high endurance, making it suitable for automotive components.
