Samsung Display is currently developing a 7-inch OLED prototype panel that eliminates the need for Fine Metal Mask (FMM) technology. The company is utilizing its proprietary Micro Patterning OLED (MPO) technology to create engineering samples for this project.
The development initiative began in March of this year. While the project is not tied to a specific client, Samsung is advancing the technology to a level suitable for mass production. The company expects to complete the project by the end of 2026, though the timeline may extend into the first quarter of 2027.
The MPO process forms RGB pixels using microscopic isolation structures and photolithography, avoiding the need for traditional FMM. Unlike other methods that require etching organic layers, MPO restricts materials to specific areas during deposition, which may help the company bypass existing patents held by competitors like Visionox or LG Display.
