Rivian is set to integrate third-party AI agents into its electric vehicles, with Anthropic confirmed as one of the partners. CEO Robert Scaringe announced the initiative at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, though he did not provide a specific timeline for the rollout.

The company currently utilizes a proprietary voice assistant capable of managing vehicle functions such as climate control and seat heating, as well as summarizing news. This system dynamically selects between local and cloud-based models based on query complexity. Since May, the assistant has also integrated with external services like Google Calendar.

Scaringe emphasized that these new AI agents will be restricted from accessing critical vehicle control systems, such as braking or steering. The integration aims to provide a seamless experience where the car can pull context from other devices, such as coordinating calendar events or meal planning.

Further details regarding the implementation will be disclosed at the upcoming AI & Autonomy Day event scheduled for December. This move follows a similar trend in the automotive industry, as Tesla introduced access to the Grok chatbot earlier this year.
