Rivian is prioritizing the development of autonomous vehicle software, even at the cost of delaying company profitability. CEO RJ Scaringe stated that autonomy will eventually allow the company to move beyond its current SUV and truck lineup to create new, radically different vehicle form factors.

The company is currently scaling production of its R2 SUV to address long-standing financial losses. Regarding autonomy, Rivian is transitioning from a previous software approach and currently offers a driver assistance system that allows hands-free operation under supervision.

Rivian plans to launch a point-to-point navigation feature by the end of the year, which will operate without driver intervention while still requiring monitoring. The company is also developing full autonomy for future robotaxi versions of the R2 SUV for use on the Uber platform.

Despite the potential for robotaxis, Scaringe believes that personally owned vehicles will remain dominant, accounting for the vast majority of miles driven in the United States. He confirmed that the company is already planning a future model, the R4, which will follow the R3.
