Rivian is rolling out a themed software update for its R1T, R1S, and R2 models in time for the 2026 Halloween season. The update is free and does not require a visit to a service center or paid add-ons. Users can activate the features via a red toggle in the vehicle interface, which synchronizes interior lighting, exterior light shows, and audio.

The Ghostbusters mode includes the film's theme song, custom lock sounds, and a dedicated app on the driver display. For first-generation R1 vehicles, the update adds an Ecto-1 chime, while second-generation R1 and R2 models receive additional features like a scavenger hunt, a parked-display game, and sound options such as Proton Pack and Chant.

The update requires software version 2026.36.0 for R1 vehicles and 2026.36.40 for the R2. Owners can also control light effects, music, and the Trick or Treat mode remotely through the updated Rivian mobile app. Additionally, the company is hosting themed events at various Rivian Spaces, featuring screenings and displays of Ecto-R1 builds.

The Ecto-R1 builds are based on the R1S and feature 22-inch aero wheels, No-Ghost badging, and a custom roof rack equipped with sirens, spotlights, and a radar dish. These components were developed in-house by the Rivian Special Projects team. The campaign also features an advertisement starring Bill Murray, who reprises his role as Peter Venkman.
