The Quantum Alliance, a new industry group, launched on October 15-16, 2026. It consists of nine organizations, including Quantus, American Fortress, and Intmax, aiming to establish verifiable standards for quantum resistance in blockchain networks.
The alliance plans to develop open definitions for post-quantum readiness, focusing on transaction signatures, key management, and secure migration frameworks. It also intends to address zero-knowledge proof systems and maintain cross-chain compatibility during the transition.
The initiative responds to risks posed by Shor’s algorithm, which could potentially derive private keys from exposed public keys. Currently, an estimated 6.04 million to 6.4 million BTC, representing about 30.2% of the total supply, have public keys visible on-chain.
While NIST finalized general post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024, the alliance seeks to adapt these for blockchain-specific challenges. These include increased signature sizes affecting block space and the complexity of coordinating upgrades across decentralized networks.
