PyTorch 2.15, released on October 28, 2026, introduces a rewritten backend for Nvidia’s Collective Communications Library (NCCL) as the default for distributed training. This update aims to prevent a single faulty GPU from causing a full restart of AI training jobs by improving fault-focused communications.

The release features a new backend-agnostic flight recorder that automatically captures diagnostic state when collective operations hang or time out. This tool is designed to simplify root cause analysis by providing data on stuck processes, which previously lacked clear error messages.

New reconfiguration paths allow training clusters to recover more quickly after failures. These features require NCCL 2.29 or later, or RCCL 2.30.7 for ROCm environments. The release includes 3,117 commits contributed by 583 individuals.

Legacy fallback options remain available in version 2.15 but are scheduled for removal in the subsequent release. Teams are advised to test the new backend and verify library compatibility to avoid issues once the old path is deprecated.
