The AI coding tool Cursor introduced a real-time voice chat feature for its agents on November 6. This update enables two-way verbal communication, allowing developers to describe tasks, check progress, and review code status while the agent continues background operations.
The feature is available across the Cursor IDE, web interface, and iOS app. Users can initiate calls via the interface or by using the command Hey Siri, call Cursor on iPhones. The system supports managing calls through the lock screen or Dynamic Island, including options to mute or end sessions.
Unlike standard dictation, this system uses voice-to-voice interaction powered by Grok Voice for recognition and synthesis. The voice agent manages communication, while the coding agent handles tasks and provides progress updates. Users can choose from five voice profiles: Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex, and Sal.
The tool allows users to query code differences and history without interrupting active coding tasks. It also supports switching between different agents in multi-worker projects. Privacy Mode is available to ensure zero data retention during these sessions.
Cursor has implemented usage limits for the voice feature. Sessions automatically terminate after approximately 10 minutes if the user remains silent and no tasks are running. The coding agents continue to utilize the user-selected models for their primary functions.
