The first beta of FreeBSD 15.2 was released on November 6, marking the start of public testing. A key feature is experimental support for cross-building base system packages on Linux and macOS hosts, reducing the need for a native FreeBSD environment. Users must manually configure the pkg tool to utilize this capability.
The release addresses dozens of security vulnerabilities identified over recent months, including use-after-free, heap overflows, and potential remote code execution flaws. These updates aim to bolster system security and improve compatibility across various environments, including file systems and remote management tools.
Technical updates include the adoption of the ld.lld linker as the default for Clang and the integration of LLVM 21.1.8. For laptop users, a new rc.conf option, backlight_enable, allows the system to save and restore screen brightness settings across reboots.
Cloud-based FreeBSD EC2 desktop AMIs now default to the KDE desktop environment with XRDP enabled for remote access. Additionally, the update includes various hardware driver fixes and new device IDs to improve hardware recognition.
The final release of FreeBSD 15.2 is scheduled for December 8, 2026. The development team plans to issue weekly beta releases, with at least one release candidate expected within the next month.
