PNC Financial Services Group, a bank with $603 billion in total assets, is shifting its AI strategy toward internal development. The company plans to build its own infrastructure, including the acquisition of data centers and Nvidia GPUs, to reduce reliance on external vendors.

The bank has identified 171 specific automation opportunities, such as fraud detection and call-center tasks. These initiatives target a potential addressable spend of $1.4 billion between 2025 and 2030, aiming to avoid usage-based pricing models common with third-party providers.

PNC expects these efforts to generate an additional 40 points of operating leverage through 2030. This goal follows a previous period from 2022 to 2025, during which the bank achieved 30 points of operating leverage through earlier automation projects.

By owning its hardware and training proprietary language models, the bank seeks to mitigate the risks of vendor lock-in and rising costs. While PNC will maintain some external partnerships, the primary focus remains on achieving operational self-sufficiency.
