As agentic AI moves from analyzing transactions to direct participation in operational workflows, it is revealing a structural mismatch in financial institutions. Much of the technology supporting card issuance was originally designed for human coordination across separate systems, whereas AI agents are built to execute tasks across systems in real time.
Card replacement is a primary example of this shift. A single request for a lost card typically requires address verification, PIN management, token updates, physical and virtual card issuance, fulfillment, and customer communication. In fragmented environments, these steps are often handled as separate handoffs.
According to the AI-Ready Issuing Tracker Series, approximately 25% of inbound contact center calls in some issuing environments are related to card status questions. Integrating issuance, fulfillment, and communications allows these inquiries to be converted into proactive notifications and provides the infrastructure necessary for AI agents to manage the process autonomously.
While 52% of banks have piloted agentic AI, only 16% have fully deployed production use cases. The competitive advantage for banks now lies in operational maturity and the execution environment. This includes proprietary data, institutional rules, permissions, APIs, and the controls necessary to move from decision to action without compromising compliance or customer experience.
