Users on Reddit and the official OpenAI developer forum reported sudden account deactivations starting November 7. The affected accounts include those with Pro subscriptions costing $200 per month. Users stated they received no prior warnings or notifications before losing access to their chat history and stored data.
One user, who utilized advanced security settings with physical keys, speculated that using VPN nodes from different regions might have triggered the deactivation. Another user reported their account was flagged for alleged links to a previously terminated account, though they denied owning any other profiles. Appeals in these cases were rejected quickly.
OpenAI Support stated that account-specific issues cannot be resolved in public forums. The company directs users to submit appeals via email links or the official help center. OpenAI has not provided a unified explanation for the recent wave of reports or disclosed the number of affected users.
The official OpenAI help center lists several grounds for suspension, including policy violations, unauthorized sharing of API keys, security anomalies, and accessing services from unsupported regions. While VPN usage is a potential risk, it remains unconfirmed if this is the primary cause for the recent account closures.
