OpenAI launched the Data agent within its ChatGPT Work platform on September 10, 2026. This tool enables enterprise users to query corporate data, create interactive dashboards, and initiate follow-up actions using natural language instead of SQL.
The agent functions as an orchestration layer, connecting directly to existing data sources such as Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Databricks, and Snowflake. This design eliminates the need for data migration or centralization into a single repository.
OpenAI previously implemented an internal version of this technology in January 2026. The system managed complex queries across more than 600 petabytes of data and approximately 70,000 datasets within the company.
The Data agent is a module of ChatGPT Work, an enterprise workspace based on GPT-5.6 that OpenAI released in July 2026. The platform is designed to execute multi-step tasks across various applications, including Slack and Gmail.
The product competes with tools like Anthropic's Cowork, released in July 2026, as well as analytics solutions from Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce. OpenAI distinguishes its offering through platform agnosticism, allowing integration across diverse cloud environments.
