OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in AI agents designed to manage drug development workflows. The startup, founded in 2022, previously raised approximately $20 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Definition Capital, Insight Partners, and 8VC.
The Orchestra Bio team and its platform will be integrated into Rosalind, OpenAI’s suite of AI tools for chemists and biologists. While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition aims to automate the coordination of complex drug development programs, which often involve multiple internal departments and external partners.
OpenAI notes that bringing a new drug to market can take up to 15 years and cost over $2.6 billion. By deploying AI agents to monitor tasks and identify potential delays, the company intends to accelerate the development process and improve efficiency for pharmaceutical researchers.
This acquisition follows a series of health-tech moves by OpenAI, including the January launch of ChatGPT Health and the acquisition of the startup Torch for a reported $100 million. In April, the company also introduced GPT-Rosalind, a specialized model currently available to select U.S. enterprise customers.
