OpenAI has officially acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup specializing in AI-driven platforms for drug development. The deal, announced on October 20, 2026, marks a strategic shift for OpenAI as it moves from providing standalone AI models to offering comprehensive workflow solutions for the pharmaceutical industry.

The acquired platform functions as an agentic operating layer that coordinates drug development phases through collaboration between human scientists and AI agents. This approach aims to address the current industry bottleneck, where bringing a new drug to market in the United States typically requires 10 to 15 years.

OpenAI plans to integrate the Orchestra Bio technology into its existing Rosalind life sciences suite, which already features tools for biological and chemical reasoning. The combined platform will focus on managing the entire drug development pipeline rather than just molecule discovery.

Orchestra Bio was founded in October 2022 by Ashoka Rajendra and secured seed funding in late 2022 in a round led by investors including Jay Rughani. The acquisition concludes the startup's independent development cycle of approximately four years.
