Nvidia is actively promoting the integration of AI into the US nuclear energy sector to meet the surging power demands of large-scale data centers. The company aims to accelerate the deployment of small modular reactors and microreactors by utilizing AI-driven design, simulation, and operational tools.
In February 2026, Nvidia and the Idaho National Laboratory launched the PROMETHEUS project under the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. The initiative targets a two-fold increase in the speed of reactor development and a reduction in operational costs by over 50% through generative AI and digital twins.
A joint initiative between Microsoft and Nvidia, announced in March 2026, focuses on streamlining permitting and design processes. One referenced case study within these efforts demonstrated a 92% reduction in permitting time, highlighting the potential for repeatable facility designs.
A significant milestone occurred on July 1, 2026, when Valar Atomics used its Ward 250 microreactor to power an Nvidia Blackwell AI chip in Utah. This marked the first instance of an advanced nuclear reactor supplying electricity to an AI system in the United States.
Nvidia and its partners are currently planning a 30 MW waterless data-center pilot to address water consumption issues in traditional cooling methods. These efforts align with broader government objectives, including executive orders from May 2026 that target a fourfold increase in US nuclear capacity.
