Singapore-based startup Nexstrom has secured $12 million in a funding round led by Xora Innovation, a venture firm associated with the sovereign wealth fund Temasek. Founded in December 2023, the company focuses on developing equipment for manufacturing two-dimensional semiconductor materials at a wafer scale.
The startup utilizes proprietary Metal-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition systems to produce monocrystalline 2D films on 300mm wafers, which is the industry standard size. Nexstrom aims to provide technology for ultra-low-power chips designed to meet the increasing demands of AI workloads.
According to the company, its materials, based on transition metal dichalcogenides, offer 100x carrier mobility compared to conventional methods at a thickness of less than 1nm. Additionally, the technology reportedly provides a 50% improvement in power efficiency over leading silicon solutions.
Nexstrom is led by CEO Phoebe Tan and Chief Scientist Lance Li. The company collaborates with Purdue University, the National University of Singapore, and Dankook University, with a joint technical paper on scaling 2D semiconductor nanoribbons scheduled for release in January 2026.
