The Dutch government has launched a national strategy titled Choosing AI for Everyone to decrease the country's reliance on foreign technology corporations. The cabinet officially approved this vision on November 6, 2026, with State Secretary Willemijn Aerdts overseeing the initiative.
The strategy allocates €120 million to support European AI infrastructure and promote responsible development. These funds are designated for the Netherlands' participation in the Important Project of Common European Interest, or IPCEI, specifically focused on artificial intelligence.
The funding is scheduled to become effective in 2027. The government intends to provide further details regarding new computing infrastructure and datacenters during the first quarter of 2027.
The initiative focuses on three primary objectives: responsible deployment, economic growth, and societal benefits, with a specific emphasis on providing support to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Despite the goal of reducing dependence on foreign tech giants, the Netherlands is also participating in Pax Silica, a US-led initiative aimed at strengthening global chip and AI infrastructure.
