NASA has finalized the architecture for the Artemis III mission, scheduled for launch in 2027. This mission serves as a critical orbital rehearsal for the upcoming lunar landing, featuring docking tests with lunar lander prototypes developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin in low Earth orbit.

The mission involves the SLS heavy rocket and the Orion spacecraft carrying the astronaut crew. Blue Origin will launch its Blue Moon test lander, which will remain in a parking orbit for up to 30 days. Astronauts will enter the lander to verify the life support systems and internal functionality.

The SpaceX Starship prototype, standing 52 meters tall, will also undergo docking tests. NASA will evaluate the attitude control and communication logic of the Orion-Starship assembly using a docking system installed on the nose cone of the Starship vehicle.

Artemis III requires a complex sequence of launches involving three distinct heavy-lift rockets. Following the tests, the crew will return to Earth and splash down in the Pacific Ocean. This mission is a precursor to the Artemis IV mission, which is planned for 2028 to achieve the first human lunar landing since 1972.
