The UK Space Agency (UKSA) has selected the startup ClearSpace as the prime contractor for the nation's inaugural active-debris removal mission. The project is scheduled for launch no earlier than 2029.
The contract is valued at approximately £61 million, which is equivalent to $81 million. ClearSpace is tasked with removing two defunct, UK-registered satellites from low Earth orbit using robotic technology.
The mission requires the company to demonstrate capabilities in in-orbit inspection, proximity operations, and the capture of unprepared objects. These technologies are intended to support future commercial in-orbit servicing.
UKSA officials stated that the mission aims to address the growing number of satellites in orbit. The government views this contract as a way to support the British satellite sector and foster economic growth.
Successful execution of this mission is expected to provide ClearSpace with a pathway to secure further debris-removal contracts from international governments and commercial satellite operators.
