Elon Musk announced that The Boring Company is developing a tunnel project between Austin and San Antonio. The proposed Hyperloop-style system aims to transport passengers at speeds exceeding 200 mph, potentially reducing travel time between the two cities to under 30 minutes.
The distance between Austin and San Antonio along the I-35 corridor is approximately 80 miles. Currently, traffic congestion can extend the travel time to 2.5 hours. Despite the announcement on X, there are no established timelines, approved routes, permits, or confirmed funding for the project.
The Boring Company recently secured $3 billion in funding, reaching a valuation of $23 billion in a round led by investors from the UAE. Despite this capital, the company has yet to deliver a high-speed transit system. Previous proposals for similar projects in other regions were announced but ultimately abandoned.
The industry has seen other failed attempts at high-speed vacuum-tube transit. Hyperloop One, which raised hundreds of millions of dollars, ceased operations in December 2023 without transporting any passengers. To date, no functional Hyperloop system exists anywhere in the world.
