Elon Musk announced a plan to distribute one SpaceX share to every child in the United States in 2027. Based on the closing price of $146.03 per share on October 16, the total value of the giveaway is estimated to exceed $10.5 billion.
The initiative targets approximately 72 million children under the age of 18. According to an August filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Musk holds about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, meaning this transfer would represent roughly 1.5% of his direct holdings.
The announcement follows a similar commitment by Anthropic, which plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund. Musk stated he prefers direct distribution to the public over the fund-based model proposed by the AI company.
Specific details regarding the distribution mechanism, eligibility criteria, and legal requirements for custodial accounts remain undisclosed. Musk has not provided a timeline or clarified if the offer is limited to U.S. citizens.
