Microsoft announced plans to introduce the Extended Stable channel for Microsoft Edge on macOS, scheduled for release in January 2027. This update allows enterprise IT departments to manage browser versions with a more predictable schedule, specifically extending the major version update cycle to eight weeks.
The new channel is designed to assist organizations that manage large fleets of devices and require rigorous software testing. While the standard Edge release cycle shifted to a two-week major update cadence starting with version 152, the Extended Stable option provides a longer window for internal validation and compatibility checks.
Despite the slower major version cycle, the Extended Stable channel will continue to receive regular security patches and maintenance updates. Microsoft emphasizes that this feature is intended for managed corporate environments rather than individual home users, aiming to simplify cross-platform management for companies using both Windows and macOS.
