Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has introduced a significant update to Copilot, describing the platform as a new operating system for work. The updated tool is designed to integrate across various models, form factors, and tasks, functioning as a proactive layer throughout the workday rather than a standalone chat window.

The overhaul consolidates four key components into a single application. These include Autopilot for enterprise tasks, Code for in-app development, Home, which merges Chat and Cowork, and Office, which now integrates Word, Excel, and PowerPoint directly into the Copilot interface.

The update also adds Copilot support for Teams and introduces a feature called Today. This tool automatically retrieves relevant information from Microsoft 365 without requiring user prompts. Microsoft has notably moved away from framing Copilot as part of the Windows 11 operating system.

Internal development efforts at Microsoft previously included a project codenamed Project Aion, which explored a Copilot-centered operating system. Reports indicate this initiative dates back to 2024, though the company has provided no information regarding the current status of the project.
