Microsoft Distinguished Engineer David Fowler has publicly addressed claims that Windows is unsuitable for software development. Responding to a viral post by entrepreneur Michael Chomsky, who suggested developers should avoid Windows, Fowler stated that the number of developers using Windows 10 and Windows 11 exceeds that of any other operating system.

Fowler, who has been with Microsoft for over 18 years, emphasized that Windows remains a dominant platform for enterprise software, .NET, C#, Visual Studio, and game development. He also noted that the wide range of hardware price points for Windows devices contributes to its broad adoption among the professional developer community.

Data from the Stack Overflow 2025 developer survey supports these claims, identifying Windows as the most widely used operating system among professionals. According to the report, 49.5% of developers use Windows, while macOS accounts for 32.9%. Other platforms include Ubuntu at 27.7%, WSL at 16.8%, and Linux environments outside of Windows at 16.7%.
