Microsoft is introducing a new Watermarking Protection feature for its Edge for Business browser, scheduled for release later this year. The tool overlays semi-transparent watermarks on sensitive web content to mitigate the risk of data leaks and unauthorized sharing.
The watermark is rendered directly by the browser and includes a 'Confidential - Don't share' label, the user's identity, and a timestamp. Microsoft plans to enable customizable and dynamic watermark content in future updates to accommodate diverse enterprise requirements.
This feature integrates with the Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP) system. Watermarks appear automatically when specific policies are triggered, such as restrictions on copying, uploading, or printing. The feature does not activate if policies are set only to audit mode.
To deploy this security measure, organizations must hold Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 licenses and configure settings via the Edge management service. The feature is currently in development and preview, with a phased rollout planned for enterprise customers.
