Mercedes-Benz has introduced an optional steer-by-wire system for its new EQS electric sedan. The package includes the steer-by-wire technology, a rear-axle steering system, and a flat-bottom steering wheel with an integrated airbag structure.
In the German market, the kit is priced at €2,500 before tax, or €2,975 including tax. The system features a steering angle of only 170 degrees from lock to lock, which the company states improves handling and parking convenience while reducing vibrations on uneven roads.
The redesigned steering wheel provides more cabin space and improves visibility of the driver display. Mercedes-Benz has implemented a redundant architecture for the system, utilizing high-precision sensors and independent signal paths to ensure reliability.
In the event of a total system failure, the vehicle's ESP system is designed to maintain lateral control by utilizing rear-axle steering and targeted braking interventions on specific wheels.
