Mercedes-AMG is exploring the future of its C63 performance model, with company CTO Jörg Burzer confirming that the manufacturer is working on both gasoline and electric powertrain options. While no official product plan has been finalized, the company is considering a strategy that could see both engine types offered simultaneously.
The current four-cylinder plug-in hybrid C63 is being phased out. In the interim, Mercedes-AMG is expected to introduce a C53 model equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine. This unit is projected to deliver 443 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, with an overboost function temporarily increasing torque to 640 Nm.
The potential return of the C63 nameplate reflects a broader corporate strategy to maintain combustion engines for traditional customers while expanding the electric vehicle lineup. Mercedes-AMG has not yet provided specific technical details, performance metrics, or a definitive launch timeline for the next-generation C63.
While Mercedes-Benz has committed to keeping V8 engines in production through the 2030s, executives have previously stated there are no plans to integrate eight-cylinder power into the current C-Class generation. Any future gasoline-powered C63 is not expected before 2030 due to the recent mid-cycle facelift of the existing platform.
