Mastercard and Danske Bank have completed the first agentic transaction in Denmark. An artificial intelligence agent successfully performed both the purchase and the payment for a coffee tasting experience via the Priceless.com platform on behalf of a customer.
The transaction utilized Mastercard’s Agent Pay solution, which the company introduced in 2025. This technology aims to provide transparency and secure authentication for AI-initiated payments, ensuring that all actions remain under the consumer's control and within a verifiable framework.
Mastercard has also launched Agent Pay for Machines, a service enabling AI agents to transact directly with one another. The company views the rise of agentic commerce as a significant shift in payment behavior, comparing its adoption trajectory to the historical transition toward EMV and mobile payments.
Despite the growth in AI usage, research from PYMNTS Intelligence indicates a complex consumer landscape. While the number of AI users in the United States has reached 132 million, data shows that consumer interest in delegating spending authority to automated systems has declined over time.
