The Linux Foundation has released a study analyzing the impact of generative AI on open-source software development. While the research highlights productivity gains, it also identifies significant challenges for project maintainers regarding code quality.
According to the survey, 59% of maintainers report an increase in contributions to their projects. However, the study estimates that 25% of all incoming pull requests are now classified as low-quality AI-generated content, often referred to as AI slop.
The report notes that generative AI tools can improve productivity by up to 50% for both contributors and maintainers across various development tasks. Despite these benefits, the influx of automated submissions has created substantial pressure on project management.
To address these issues, the Linux Foundation suggests implementing stricter AI governance. Recommended measures include establishing clear contribution policies, standardizing attribution and verification processes, and maintaining investment in human mentorship.
