A study by the Linux Foundation and Red Hat reveals that generative AI tools help developers reduce coding time by up to 50%. While 59% of open-source project maintainers report an increase in contributions, this figure rises to 69% for large-scale projects.

The surge in contributions has introduced a challenge regarding code quality. Approximately 25% of pull requests are now considered low-quality AI-generated content, with this figure reaching 31% in larger projects. Furthermore, 21% of developers noted that AI tools can increase the time required for complex tasks due to the need for verification and correction.

Developers are reallocating time saved by AI toward addressing technical debt (66%), building new features (63%), and learning new skills (58%). Despite these shifts, only 35% of open-source projects have formal AI usage policies, while 32% have no plans to implement such regulations.

To mitigate risks, 61% of contributors perform manual reviews and functional tests on AI-generated code before submission. The Linux Foundation recommends that projects establish clear governance, including transparency requirements and mandatory documentation, to ensure long-term ecosystem health.
