Li Xiang, CEO of Li Auto, stated that the current trend of increasing SUV dimensions is a transitional phase. He believes that the inherent advantages of pure electric vehicle architectures will eventually end the size competition among manufacturers.
According to Li, electric motors allow for shorter front overhangs and more cabin space, while flat battery layouts eliminate the need for increased vehicle height. Consequently, electric vehicles can offer interior space comparable to traditional internal combustion engine cars while maintaining smaller exterior dimensions.
The executive noted that current industry practices still rely on traditional design mindsets. He highlighted that excessive vehicle width, such as exceeding 2 meters, creates parking difficulties and daily inconveniences for users without providing significant benefits.
Li Auto is set to launch its new family flagship SUV, the Li i9, on September 16 at 19:30. The vehicle measures 5225x1970x1752 mm with a wheelbase of 3168 mm, as detailed in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's 409th product announcement.
The Li i9 features dual electric motors with maximum power outputs of 150 kW and 250 kW, supplied by Suzhou Inovance Automotive and Jiangsu Li Auto Drive Technology. The vehicle utilizes ternary lithium-ion batteries produced by Sunwoda and Jiangsu Contemporary Amperex Technology, with assembly handled by Zhejiang Li Auto Battery.
