At the 2026 OCP Global Summit, Intel executive Nic Dubé highlighted the company's strategic position in the emerging silicon photonics market. The company aims to address current limitations in electrical interconnects, which struggle with bandwidth, range, and power consumption constraints.

Intel distinguishes itself as the only manufacturer operating a 12-inch, or 300mm, indium phosphide wafer fab capable of mass-producing silicon photonics. This infrastructure supports the company's focus on integrated laser reliability and the development of industry standards for external light sources.

The company anticipates that silicon photonics will enable new adaptive system interconnect architectures. These advancements are expected to reach a transmission energy efficiency of less than 5.5 pJ per bit, addressing long-standing industry performance goals for data center systems.
