Intel has filed a patent for a technology that embeds MicroLEDs directly into glass chip packaging. The process involves using laser treatment and etching to form die cavities and through-glass vias (TGVs), followed by copper electroplating to secure the components. Silicon nitride layers are used to bond the glass to polymer substrates.
The patent outlines various configurations for die placement and the use of reflectors to direct light through the substrate. Potential applications include diagnostic visual indicators for testing phases and aesthetic lighting. Intel has been developing glass substrate technology since the early 2010s and recently demonstrated a 24-layer glass-core panel with embedded EMIB bridges.
Industry reports suggest a potential collaboration with Taiwanese firm AU Optronics, which is developing MicroLED-based optical communication modules for AI data centers. AU Optronics showcased a system with a 10-meter interconnect range at SEMICON Taiwan 2026. Integrating MicroLEDs into packaging could serve as a foundation for future optical interconnect systems.
While Intel's patent focuses on the packaging technique rather than a complete optical interconnect solution, it aligns with the company's long-term investment in advanced interconnects. Further development would require the integration of photodetector receivers and optical fiber solutions to achieve high-speed communication capabilities.
