Fujifilm is set to increase its production capacity for 100TB magnetic storage tapes by five times. The company is backing this expansion with an investment of $63 million, marking the most significant capital injection into tape storage technology in the last two decades.

The surge in production is a direct response to the growing demand for data storage within AI-focused data centers. Magnetic tapes are increasingly utilized for long-term backup of cold data due to their durability and lower costs compared to hard disk drives and solid-state drives.

While Fujifilm focuses on 100TB cartridges, the Linear Tape-Open roadmap supports future capacities reaching up to 365TB. This development occurs amid a broader industry trend where storage manufacturers are prioritizing enterprise-grade products to address global supply shortages.

Other major industry players are also scaling their storage capabilities. Toshiba recently announced plans to double its hard disk production, while Kioxia and SanDisk have unveiled 332-layer 3D NAND flash technology to enhance SSD capacities for data center applications.
