Google has updated its policy for educational institutions, requiring schools to explicitly opt into AI products for student accounts. The company classifies its search engine, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, as part of its broader AI portfolio alongside Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Gemini in Classroom.

Under the new framework, schools gain the ability to disable specific AI tools, including those integrated into search. However, Google does not provide an option to use its search engine without AI features. Institutions must choose between enabling standard AI tools or a Guided Learning version, or they may opt to block search entirely for students.

The company maintains that AI is central to the future of search and refuses to implement a toggle to disable AI tools while keeping traditional search active. This policy remains unchanged despite public confusion regarding the potential for schools to lose access to search if they reject AI tools.

Educators seeking an AI-free search experience face limited alternatives due to the scale of Google's web index. However, following the recent antitrust ruling by the Department of Justice, Google is required to provide competitors with limited access to its index, which may eventually foster more viable search alternatives.
