Google plans to launch the experimental MVP satellite on October 1, 2024. The satellite will be carried into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base near Santa Barbara, California.

The MVP satellite is part of Google's Project Suncatcher, which explores the feasibility of deploying AI data centers in space powered by solar energy. The satellite is equipped with four TPU units, providing computing power equivalent to a single server.

The onboard solar panels generate approximately 1 kW of power, which is sufficient to operate the chips and test hardware resilience against space radiation. Google intends to use the satellite to process simple AI queries.

The MVP satellite is expected to perform operations for one year, with an overall orbital lifespan of up to six years. After this period, the satellite will descend and burn up in the atmosphere due to Earth's gravity.
