Google is launching a satellite equipped with its proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) on October 1st. The mission, part of the experimental Project Suncatcher, will utilize a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to place the hardware into low Earth orbit.
The primary objective is to evaluate how TPU chips endure the physical stress, radiation, and thermal extremes of space. During preliminary ground testing, the processors demonstrated resistance to high g-force and radiation levels, but the company emphasizes that orbital conditions require real-world validation.
The satellite will test a specialized cooling system featuring heat pipes and radiators. According to senior director of product management Travis Beals, the chips are currently limited to 15-minute operation cycles before requiring a cooldown period.
Project Suncatcher aims to eventually deploy a constellation of satellites to serve as orbital data centers. Google plans to launch two additional satellites next year as part of its long-term strategy to explore space as a location for scalable AI computing.
