General Motors is updating its vehicle maintenance systems by removing the traditional oil dipstick from specific engines. This change applies to the new V8 engines featured in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models.

The automaker will replace the manual dipstick with a digital oil level gauge integrated into the vehicle's new user interface. This update specifically concerns the 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8 engines.

Other engine options for these trucks, including the 2.7-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter diesel units, will retain the analog dipstick. The company has not yet provided further details regarding the reasoning behind this design shift.

The transition toward digital oil monitoring is part of a broader industry trend. While brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz began adopting this technology in the early 2000s, many manufacturers, such as Honda, Kia, and Ford, continue to utilize traditional dipsticks in most of their current models.
