In Kassel, Germany, a project led by ClimateHub Kassel and SoLocal Energy repurposed 300 used solar panels. These modules, which had operated on an industrial roof for approximately 13 years, were inspected and refurbished instead of being sent for recycling.

The initiative resulted in the creation of 150 residential balcony solar power systems. Out of the original batch, only 12 panels were discarded due to defects, while the rest were cleaned and fitted with new connectors. The total weight of the reused equipment reached 6 tons.

The project offered kits consisting of two 650 W modules. Pricing was tiered: €825 for the subsidized rate, €1000 for the standard rate, and €1175 to fund subsidies for low-income households. The organizers also provided inverters, battery storage, and installation support.

By extending the lifespan of these panels, the organizers estimate a reduction of approximately 500 tons of CO2 emissions. Local repair and transport companies supported the project, utilizing cargo bikes for the delivery of the equipment to residents.
