At the 2026 World Energy Storage Conference held on October 15 in Ningde, Fujian, Yang Xudong, Director of the Electronic Information Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, addressed the future of the battery sector. He emphasized that the industry must avoid blind expansion to prevent supply-demand imbalances.
The official strategy for the 15th Five-Year Plan period focuses on steady growth that aligns with current development foundations. New battery technologies, including lithium, sodium, and flow batteries, are defined by their rapid iteration and broad application potential across various energy storage and conversion systems.
On September 28, seven government departments jointly issued the 15th Five-Year Plan for the development of the new battery industry. The policy aims to strengthen innovation across the entire supply chain, specifically targeting breakthroughs in advanced materials and new battery architectures.
By 2030, the government expects the large-scale application of all-solid-state batteries. Key performance targets include increasing the cycle life of long-life lithium batteries to 15,000 cycles and reducing the defect rate of products from leading manufacturers to the PPB level.
