Three regional transmission organizations in the United States, specifically PJM, ERCOT, and SWPP, established new records for peak hourly electricity load during the summer of 2026. According to the US Energy Information Administration, these peaks were primarily driven by increased demand for cooling systems during national heat waves.
Data from the Hourly Electric Grid Monitor indicates that other grid operators also approached their historical maximums. The California Independent System Operator and the Independent System Operator for New England recorded peak loads within 2% of their previous records. Meanwhile, the New York Independent System Operator and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator remained within 3% and 4% of their respective peaks.
The figures are based on reports submitted via Form EIA-930 by balancing authorities. The administration notes that these values represent the best available data at the time of reporting, though potential reporting issues may affect data quality. Official figures published directly by individual balancing authorities may vary slightly from the data presented in the federal monitor.
