Cecilia Ziniti, a former general counsel at Replit, Amazon, and Cruise, founded GC AI to bring AI technology to corporate legal departments. Ziniti, who does not code, partnered with engineer Bardia Pourvakil to build a platform that addresses the precision and sourcing requirements of professional legal work, moving beyond the general-purpose capabilities of chatbots like ChatGPT.
The company's product suite includes an AI assistant for corporate legal teams, tools for contract analysis, and a system for handling legal requests. GC AI distinguishes itself from competitors like Harvey and Legora by focusing exclusively on in-house legal departments rather than law firms. Approximately 30% of the platform's users are employees from non-legal departments, such as HR and finance.
GC AI has experienced significant growth, increasing its customer base from 900 to roughly 2,100 companies, a 400% year-over-year growth rate. Its client list includes major organizations such as Lockheed Martin, Time, Eventbrite, Vercel, and Gusto. The company generates revenue through per-seat subscriptions and document-volume-based pricing for its contract analysis tool.
The startup has raised nearly $72 million across three funding rounds. Its most recent Series B round, co-led by Scale Venture Partners and Northzone, raised $60 million and valued the company at $555 million. Other investors include Sound Ventures, Aglaé Ventures, SilverCircle Partners, News Corp, and The Council, along with approximately 45 general counsels who invested via a special-purpose vehicle.
